Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law facing lawsuit claiming it ‘attacks’ family

A group of Florida families represented by the Southern Poverty Law Centre, Lambda Lawful, Southern Authorized Counsel, and private counsel Baker McKenzie submitted a lawsuit to block the Parental Legal rights in Education invoice. 

The invoice, which bans discussions of sexuality and gender identification in kindergarten as a result of third grade, has been labeled the “Never Say Homosexual” bill by critics.

The lawsuit argues the monthly bill efficiently silences LGBTQ+ college students and households. 

“Plaintiffs Jen and Matt Cousins want their young children, together with their non- binary seventh grader Plaintiff S.C., to feel secure and supported at college. HB 1557 assaults not only S.C. but the total Cousins loved ones,” the lawsuit reads.

LGBT groups Equality Florida and Household Equality have also sued, arguing the regulation violates the constitutionally shielded rights of free of charge speech, equal safety and due course of action of college students and families.

President Biden also took sides, contacting the mom and dad invoice “hateful” in a tweet.

“I want each member of the LGBTQI+ group — specifically the youngsters who will be impacted by this hateful bill — to know that you are cherished and approved just as you are,” he wrote in February. “I have your again, and my Administration will keep on to battle for the protections and basic safety you deserve.”

DeSantis has defended the legislation in press conferences, hitting back again at local reporters who have utilised the “Will not Say Gay” label in their thoughts.

“Does it say that in the monthly bill?” DeSantis questioned a WFLA reporter who used the misnomer, including that “it can be why men and women don’t have confidence in people like you because you peddle bogus narratives.”

The governor explained the legislation is meant to give mothers and fathers insight into the classroom.

“And we are heading to make absolutely sure that parents are able to deliver their child to kindergarten without owning some of this things injected into their college curriculum,” he included.
